Weightlifter athlete Laurel Hubbard is all set to become the first transgender sportsperson to compete at the Tokyo Olympics after being selected and approved by New Zealand for the women’s event at the Olympic Games 2021 (rescheduled).
The approval by New Zealand has triggered the debate on the fairness of the sport and event. Read the news Here.
- She had earlier competed in men’s weightlifting competitions, before her gender transition in 2013.
- Hubbard has been eligible to compete at Olympics since 2015.
- In 2015, International Olympic Committee issued guidelines to allow any transgender athlete to compete as woman on the condition that their testosterone levels are below 10 nanomoles/litre for at least 12 months before they take part in first game.
