The Costa Rican economist and former vice president will become the first-ever woman to be appointed as secretary-general of the UN’s trade and development body.

About UNCTAD:

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development was established in 1964 as a permanent intergovernmental body to deal with trade, investment and development issues of the member nations.

The organization’s goals are to maximize the trade, investment, and development opportunities of developing countries and help them in their efforts to incorporate into the world economy on a just basis. UNCTAD reports to the UN General Assembly and United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Trade, transport, finance, and technology are the main objectives of UNCTAD. The conference generally meets once in four years; the permanent secretariat of UNCTAD is in Geneva.
